Why "Barnacle SEO" Is Making A Big Comeback In Local

Why "Barnacle SEO" Is Making A Big Comeback In Local | Local SEO for local businesses | Scoop.it
Although I’d heard of “barnacle SEO” as a tactic at some of the early SEO conference networking events, the first real proponent of it in local search was Will Scott. I want to say that Will originally published this post on the now-defunct Local Search News in early 2008; but alas, the original has been […]
Peg Corwin's insight:

Barnacle SEO is "...optimizing your profiles or business pages on a well-trusted, high-ranking directory and working to promote those profiles instead of — or in tandem with — your own website."

Local directories like Yelp and Angie's List have a strong position in local search by including content that searchers are looking for.

To take advantage of barnacle SEO

 - ID your targets

 - Build great profiles

 - Do build links to it instead of your site.

Peg Corwin's insight:

Google has a separate index for local businesses, and generic queries generate a local list. If Google confuses your local business with a generic query, customers and prospects may have a difficult time finding you.

Quote: "If you’re naming a new local or national business, be sure the name of it cannot be confused with some generic object Google might view as having a different intent."

Solas recommends that if your business already has such a name, don't rebrand but work on building authority for your brand and site.

A good checklist of things to do, as well as what to avoid. I often see #7, not mentioning local specific terms in content.  On two sites I looked at, there was no location keyword on the home page.  Why?  Because the site owners knew they focused locally, but of course visitors had no clue.

Quote:  "Avoiding social media doesn’t actually make your business invisible to online consumers, nor does it keep you from being a target of potential negativity online.
